You are (still) not a dinosaur.

I wanted to revisit an interview that I did last year with Tim Olsen to see if 'dinosaur' has gone where we had hoped. In many ways I'm frustrated that the insularity of the photo community- in Minneapolis and nationally- remains, that we haven't opened a broader dialogue between the solo endeavor of making art and the people we hope are receptive to it. That said, I remain proud of each artist's individual commitment to making themselves known through this medium's unique and malleable syntax. T.W. 5.17.2012

Osama Esid "While I'm Driving"

Aleksey Myakishev

Aleksey Myakishev is a Moscow photojournalist with an acute sense of empathy for his subjects. Whether recording prisoners, provincial families, factory workers, pilgrims or village priests- his vision is consistently meditative and strongly humanistic. His portraits of children strike me as particularly affective; without cloying cuteness or condescension, Myakishev's best works are on a par with masters like Helen Levitt.

I've seldom been partial to orienting photographs vertically, so I admire it when people use the format successfully. I've also just recently become attracted to works with little apparent regard for technique, and that seem somehow without guile. Maybe it's that I'm less impressed by snark these days, given the tactics deployed against "Occupy" and movements elsewhere which hope to topple a worldview that is hostile to most of us.
