For 7 months I've deferred much of my own creative output while adjusting to a new hometown, but I have been editing a weekly themed photography feature for a website called Perfect Duluth Day. My grandiloquent intent was to shift visual discourse from hyper-abundant geographical assets, to the significant human and social capital I've found here. It can often be a frivolous exercise, though sometimes we glean relevance, maybe even grace, the way most things happen- in spite of ourselves. This week's "underwear" theme (yep) drew this submission from an artist named Aaron Reichow:

"Encountered an empty homeless camp near Point of Rocks when hiking, the depressing collection of items left behind told some kind of story. Children's underwear, crayons, baby lotion, a prescription medical device, and a burnt scrap of paper the remains of a spell scattered in the dead grass."

I've found an even shorter 'dinosaur' short story- more terse than Bruce Rogers outstanding arc of a man's entire life in two paragraphs (which set our group in motion)...

How many images like this of a self-conscious figure pinioned to a receding background have been made since Rineke Dijkstra (or August Sander for that matter)? I'd argue few: this jug-eared, pigeon-toed boy and his crocs, the mugging ecce homo-like visage of a wrestler or some UFC fighter on his jersey- a caricature of the masculinity we're made to aspire to- the happily-lit, rundown road. This is the camera's capacity to do far more than merely describe.

For anyone as taken with photobooth portraits as I am, flickr user anyjazz65 has gathered a vast, eclectic collection. Unmoored from context, left to merely exist in seas of numerous possible meanings, I found in them a poignant statement about self-representation and our brief transit from being distinctly present to too soon being cast into oblivion. Cheyenne Montgomery's best work represents precisely what our ambiguously-defined group aspires to be about- showing the beauty in and dignity of our ordinary daily doings. Her work is endlessly empathetic, not given to cloy poses or the veneer of cuteness. I recall the inane, indignant comments one image (in the gallery linked below) received regarding the cleanliness of Montgomery's tub, as though our lives had to be relieved of their inherent messes before we dared present them. Her images remind you what an important matter it can be to merely "see how we are." gallery.

Empty Bowls Project NE

On Sunday, August 11 from 2-4 we'll have an informal meeting at the Coffee Shop NE to gauge interest in hosting the 1st "Empty Bowls Project" in Northeast Minneapolis. For anyone not familiar, Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to address hunger. Artists offer bowls, vendors provide a simple meal of soup. Guests donate whatever they can, and keep the vessel. All proceeds are then given to causes of our choosing. More here: http://www.emptybowls.net/
