Often in our online group images will appear next to each other- despite the random order, or wildly variant date they're invited in- that are beautifully congruous, or perversely consonant. Here's one of my favorite accidental parings representing the former from the far, far past of 'you are not a dinosaur's' 23,000+ images. Find more at flickr.com/groups/notadinosaur. T.W.

How many images like this of a self-conscious figure pinioned to a receding background have been made since Rineke Dijkstra (or August Sander for that matter)? I'd argue few: this jug-eared, pigeon-toed boy and his crocs, the mugging ecce homo-like visage of a wrestler or some UFC fighter on his jersey- a caricature of the masculinity we're made to aspire to- the happily-lit, rundown road. This is the camera's capacity to do far more than merely describe.

For anyone as taken with photobooth portraits as I am, flickr user anyjazz65 has gathered a vast, eclectic collection. Unmoored from context, left to merely exist in seas of numerous possible meanings, I found in them a poignant statement about self-representation and our brief transit from being distinctly present to too soon being cast into oblivion. Cheyenne Montgomery's best work represents precisely what our ambiguously-defined group aspires to be about- showing the beauty in and dignity of our ordinary daily doings. Her work is endlessly empathetic, not given to cloy poses or the veneer of cuteness. I recall the inane, indignant comments one image (in the gallery linked below) received regarding the cleanliness of Montgomery's tub, as though our lives had to be relieved of their inherent messes before we dared present them. Her images remind you what an important matter it can be to merely "see how we are." gallery.

Empty Bowls Project NE

On Sunday, August 11 from 2-4 we'll have an informal meeting at the Coffee Shop NE to gauge interest in hosting the 1st "Empty Bowls Project" in Northeast Minneapolis. For anyone not familiar, Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to address hunger. Artists offer bowls, vendors provide a simple meal of soup. Guests donate whatever they can, and keep the vessel. All proceeds are then given to causes of our choosing. More here: http://www.emptybowls.net/

When I first conceived our "Useless, useless" theme, I asked that each contributing artist consider working in a light that affirms the value of things near to us that may seem trivial, but that hold limitless potential to positively impact the people and things which we love.The 700+ images I've invited to our May 3rd exhibition "get" this theme on an axiomatic, visceral level. Their images communicate abundantly the one quality, the one word I would choose to describe our entire effort­ empathy.

The 'you are not a dinosaur' photography collective's 3rd exhibition opens May 3rd at the California Building in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Images from around the world were selected from the 17,000+ photographs in our ancillary flickr group. "Useless, useless" is an exhibition that reveals the merit and dignity of our trivial daily doings. At a friend's memorial service last year, these last words of Lincoln's assassin came to mind when I saw starkly how much her one life had affected so many. It staggered me to consider Booth's inability to recognize how a single hateful act can galvanize so many differences and generate persistent conflict. The "better angels of our nature" have a comparable capacity to accomplish conflict's opposite- resolution, even harmony. The works we'll share assert the value of things near to us that may seem ordinary, but that hold vast potential to positively impact the people we love, and the communities we belong to.
